Retro Recipe – Sauerkraut Salad

Fan of the show, Sarah, sent us a stack of recipes cut from newspapers that she found in recipe box purchased at an estate sale. This recipe for Sauerkraut Salad seemed like the strangest recipe of the bunch.

Sarah has an adorable website where she explores her “inner Renaissance woman” and encourages her readers and podcast listeners to do the same. Find out more at

  1. My grandparents called bell peppers mangos. I wonder if that's what they meant by mango – not the tropical fruit. I don't know how readily available it would have been years ago.

  2. Almost nothing makes me lose my appetite. Remember about 9 or 10 years ago when there was that salmonella peanut butter thing? I got that. I was sicker than I've ever been and I STILL didn't lose my appetite as much as hearing the ingredients list for this recipe.

Edit: Well I'm glad it turned better than you feared. It would almost have to, though. Stephanie and Christine, both y'all's hair looked really pretty!

  3. Sugar makes everything tastes better. My mom used to call it, " Let's doctor that up."

  4. Love it! I can’t believe it turned it to be edible. And fascinated by this whole green pepper / mango conversation!

  5. I use to make kombucha and my kids said that I was growing extra skin in a jar! I think it’s called a scoby.

  6. Wow, that was surprising! So if the original recipe really meant to use green pepper do you think it still would be as tasty as what you made with an actual mango? Very interesting but good grief it made a huge amount!

  7. interesting salad. I may try this one day with green peppers and the jar of sauerkraut drained. i too am a fan of sauerkraut like stephanie.

  8. I love that I've stumbled across your Channel awesome content. Where do we send old recipes too? Omg that sauerkraut placenta you're talking about has me laughing so hard right now!!!!
